Power of Words

A/Professor Neil Jeyasingam

BSc (Med), MBBS, MBus (Health Admin), MPsych, FRANZCP, Cert(POA)

Professor Jeyasingam is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and psychodynamic psychotherapy supervisor.

A former research scholar of the Institute of Psychiatry (Sydney) and Institute of Psychiatry (UK), I obtained my medical degree and psychiatry training in Sydney, then proceeded to have advanced training at the Maudsley in London. I hold a double masters in Psychiatry and Business (Health Administration), and am published in phenomenology and personality disorders in the elderly. In public practice I am the area clinical director for mental health services in a major regional centre. I’m a Foundation Accredited Member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand Psychotherapy Faculty, a Clinical Associate Professor with Sydney University, and the former Chair of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry NSW.

My experience has led to me providing assessments and treatments for patients throughout the life cycle, and as a result I see adolescents, general adults as well as older patients. My rural experience over the years has had me being the only available psychiatrist for 196,000 square kilometres. One of the benefits of public psychiatry experience is that you learn to treat whoever shows up! It also means unparalleled beauty in the incredibly varied stories I am privileged to hear.

My philosophy and approach is to work closely with your general practitioner in determining your health outcomes. In many situations patients do not need to see me again, and I aim to provide a comprehensive plan with every consultation.

I look forward to meeting you, and helping you with your story – to let you write it the way that it should be written.
